145 homes approved in central Liverpool
Plans by Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) to build almost 150 affordable homes on Edge Lane were given the green light today, with development set to start as soon as March 2018.
Liverpool City Council's planning committee unanimously approved LMH’s ambitious proposals to transform the high-profile 1.5-hectare plot bounded by Royston Street, Durning Road, Marmaduke Street and Edge Lane into high-quality housing.
The £20 million scheme incorporates two primary elements:
Three and four storey properties facing Edge Lane, which will host 107 one- and two-bed apartments. These properties will be Rent to Buy homes - a new product aimed at potential future home-owners
Behind, facing Royston Street, 38 attractive two-and three-bed homes will be available for LMH Shared Ownership customers
Designed by Bowker Sadler Architecture, each home will benefit from off-road car and cycle parking spaces, private amenity areas and high-quality fixtures and fittings throughout.
Strong demand is anticipated for the low-cost home-ownership properties, fuelled by the wider regeneration of the arterial Edge Lane corridor where major projects include the Royal Hospital, Knowledge Quarter and Liverpool Shopping Park.
LMH Chief Executive Steve Coffey said, “Bringing new affordable homes to Edge Lane is great news for the area and will contribute significantly to the exciting transformation underway in this part of our city.
“As part of the main gateway to the city, the development will welcome visitors as well as providing much-needed low-cost home-ownership properties for local people.”
LMH’s Edge Lane development forms part of the Liverpool Housing Partnership - a ground-breaking collaboration between Liverpool City Council, LMH, Redrow Homes and contractor Willmott Dixon that is creating 1,500 brand-new homes across the city.
Councillor Frank Hont, Cabinet member for housing, said, “This scheme is a vital component of the regeneration of Edge Lane. The Knowledge Quarter and Liverpool Shopping Park are transforming each end of this important gateway, and alongside it we are determined to get the right mix and quality of housing for local people.
“This is all about making Edge Lane a great place to live and reverse decades of decline.”
The development is anticipated to complete in 2020.
